Hailing from Evanston, IL, Sam Nicolosi has built his name as an independent singer, songwriter and producer, being compared to a multitude of well known acts across the pop rock and electronic scene. This past Friday saw him release his newest single, “Fiction”, which is taken from his upcoming Origins EP. The song itself is a dark, emotional alternative-pop track that’s about creating a false sense of reality around a relationship to uphold that relationship.
About the song, Sam said, “‘Fiction’ has a lot in common with my last release, ‘Caught Up.’ The song is about holding on to something or someone out of comfort. We, as humans, become complacent and afraid of change – we will romanticize and distort reality to fit into the narrative we wish to tell ourselves. Maybe you’re holding on to love that has lost its spark, or a friend that you no longer truly connect with. Maybe there’s a crazy family member that you can’t pretend is sane anymore. We all become invested in the fiction we tell ourselves to be happy.”
We all lie to ourselves to preserve relationships and uphold the narratives we choose to believe in.
