Show Review: Veil of Maya “No Sun / No Moon Tour”

Sunday October 1st, I got the chance to experience Veil of Maya live for the first time at the Agora Theatre in Cleveland, OH. The Chicago based unit began their journey on September 29th in support of The Devil Wears Prada for the “No Sun / No Moon Tour.” The tour also features special guests Silent Planet and Thousand Below, which makes a pretty solid line-up for anyone who is a fan of metal/hardcore.

To be honest, I’ve only been listening to Veil of Maya for the past year when I discovered their latest album Matriarch. However, many of the fans that filled the venue had been on the VoM bandwagon for the past decade. The band kicked off with “Overthrow,” which immediately got the crowd excited, sending the die-hard fans into a moshing frenzy. Their stage presence alone was enough to get the crowd going, the members of the band portraying the emotion of each track perfectly. Front-man Lukas Magyar gesticulated passionately along with the lyrics, and did an impressive job of getting everyone in the room hyped up and off of their feet, making the crowd feel as if they were part of the performance.

 

The entire set was filled with heavy breakdowns blended well with melodious choruses, and complemented with intricate guitar riffs. The four guys put on a smooth and extremely well balanced set which included tracks from several of their past albums. The set included some of their more popular songs including “Nyu,” and “Ellie,” from Matriarch, “Punisher” from Eclipse, and “It’s Not Safe To Swim Today,” from The Common Man’s Collapse. The band ended their performance with “Mikasa,” leaving the entire room wanting more of Veil of Maya.
