In a scene that is so over-saturated with bands all vying their big break, the unfortunate sideeffect is how easy it is to get lost in the noise. While its rare to find a truly special underground band, quite often you can find some that have noticeable flaws, but still make for a good listen. That is where UK metalcore outfit Greayhaven fall as their latest EP, State of Mind, shows how close they are to breaking through and hitting the next stage of their careers.
While the band does well in separating themselves from others instrumentally with guitar solos, unique, fast paced riffs and catchy guitar shredding that are not nearly as common in the scene, there are a few other glaring issues hold them back. One of these issues is the screaming, which consist mostly of gnarly lows and raspy mids. It’s a style of the screaming that ultimately comes across as out of place over wailing, fast paced rock instrumentals and feels like an odd fit. On the flip side of that, it truly helps make the highlights of the album stand out which are the signing and unique instrumentation. There are plenty of catchy hooks and bouncy riffs to be found, which are beautifully complimented by well executed guitar playing, making for an overall fun listen.
The official music video for “On & On” by London based band Greyhaven UK, taken from their sophomore EP “State of Mind” which is due for release worldwide on Friday 2nd September 2016. “On & On” is written about the effects of depression and anxiety in young people.
While Greyhaven is not doing anything new, the potential is obviously there. With some refinement and polish, this is a band truly on the precipice of breaking through and gaining the momentum bands need to carry them to the next stage of their careers. Fans of alternative rock with a tinge of heavy are sure to get a few good listens out of the album while others will be introduced to a new band to add their rotation.
